Are maternity photographs important?

I did maternity photographs with both my boys. There is nothing more incredible than growing a life inside your body. For reals. It is weird and alien like and kind of scary when you stop to think about the grand exit, but it is really cool when it’s happening. I didn’t really enjoy being pregnant. Honestly, it drained the life out of me and I was very jealous of the glowing mamas out there. What I do love is looking back with rose colored glasses. My maternity photos really do help me with that. I feel more connected to my pregnancies now, years later, than I did when it was happening.

The hazy yet fond recollections of my children in their early stages are brought into clear focus when I flip through my maternity photographs.

So yes, maternity photos are important if you believe you will miss this stage. And for those of you who feel like you won’t ever miss being pregnant, they are even more important.

Maternity and Newborn Photography with the same photographer

Trust is built through connection and relationship. I love when I have the opportunity to photograph a pregnant mama and then meet the family again for their newborn photos. When we have a chance to run around and get some beautiful images of you and your partner before the baby comes along (especially when it is your first baby!), then connect again with your baby in your arms, it makes the sessions run so smoothly. Plus I do always love seeing my families again. I really, really, really love seeing you all again. We share our birth stories, talk about how hard it is to have a newborn baby, chat about the horrors of learning to breast feed, and snuggle your sweet smelling baby.

I would love to photograph your journey from pregnancy to baby!

Choosing a location for your maternity photos

The options are endless on locations for photos in the Sacramento area. How do you choose? I like to make a session as personal as possible, and if you are from out of the area or simply looking for someplace that shows the natural beauty of your home-town, I am happy to help! When Mita contacted me about maternity photos she wanted a location that had some romance and felt natural and wild. We choose one of my favorite fields in Folsom. The time of year allowed us some gorgeous green grass and a golden sunset. She loved her pregnancy and wanted to capture the way she felt during this time.

I have a whole bunch of fun ideas for the more adventurous maternity mamas, urban session ideas, natural locations, and intimate in-home sessions are also an option! When I said the options are endless they really are. I love assisting to help you brainstorm a place you can connect with. If you want to really love your final images you need to have the location be a place you feel comfortable.

Connection is most important

No matter the venue, what matters most is your connection with your baby and your partner. The images that resonate most with me and my families are those showing natural and authentic expressions and interactions. It is hard for me to explain how I shoot a session…it is less posing and more chatting. It is a lot of walking around and laughing and finding pockets of light. It is walking away probably feeling like we didn’t really get anything good 😉 then seeing magic in your final gallery. The experience is important. Your connection to your family and my connection to you both matter. I’m here to work with you on finding that perfect place where we can get lost in your moments.
